2013-2014 Mentoring Program Begins

After receiving nearly 125 applications, the Collegiate has accepted 28 students to this mentoring cohort. Students were selected based on their ability to benefit from the mentoring program. They were evaluated without consideration of their academic and extracurricular merits but instead their desire to be a part of the mentoring program and their need for the program.

The mentoring program matches mentees with a mentor from a top college or university in the United States. They work individually with their mentees via Skype, email, phone, and social media to guide them through the admissions process and ultimately help them gain admittance to and pay for the college that is best for them.

Our 2013-2014 mentees come from diverse backgrounds: they’re of a variety of races, socioeconomic statuses, family structures, secondary schools, geographic locations, and educational backgrounds. Though diversity cannot be highlighted through check boxes alone, we believe that data is valuable for readers to understand who our program serves.

Racial Demographics

Mentees come from most every race and ethnicity. Of our 28 mentees, more than half identify as Hispanic or Latino of any race. Black students make up the next largest racial group followed by white and South Asian mentees, Southeast Asian students, and lastly East Asian and Pacific Islander students.

Economic Background

Of our 28 students, 18 come from families that make less than $50,000 per year. And 25 are eligible for free or reduced lunch through the National School Lunch Program. Most all mentees have limited resources that middle- and upper-class students have to help them through the admissions process.


Educational Background

Twenty mentees will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college or university meaning that 71% of mentees are first-generation college students.

Most mentees come from traditional public schools (21) though a few attend public charter schools (5) or private religious schools (2).

Geographic Residence 

Participants of the mentoring program are scattered across the country and come from 10 different states.



Mentors will begin working with their mentees this week. We cannot wait to watch our mentees succeed over the course of the year!
