8 Tips for Surviving Sandy

8 Tips for Surviving Sandy

Colleges up and down the East Coast have cancelled classes for today and tomorrow. As a result, college students up and down the East Coast are celebrating. Here are a number of tips that will help you both stay safe in the storm and have a lot of fun at the same time.

Stockpile Water It’s possible that you will lose water during the storm. Fill every possible receptacle with water if you still have it. You can use this water to drink but also to flush toilets, wash your hands, etc.

Pick Up Everything off the Floor If you live on a lower level of a dorm, apartment, or house, move everything, especially valuables, up off the floor. If possible, move both yourself and these items to a friend’s room on higher ground. Your campus could end up looking like this:Courtesy of the Associated Press

Charge Electronics The last thing you want is for the power to go off right before your laptop and cellphone die. Keep them charged all day.

Keep in Touch with Family and Friends I guarantee your family is worrying about you now if your going to school on the East Coast. Do your family a favor and shoot them a text every now them to let them know you’re doing just fine.

Close the Window This may seem like an obvious one, but it can be easy to forget that open window since the weather has been pretty nice during the last few weeks.

Catch Up on Work Likely midterms are happening around this time. Devote at least a couple of hours today and tomorrow to get on top of your work. This is that one miraculous chance you have to either catch up or get ahead.

Stay Inside if Possible Make friends with your hallmates if you haven’t already. Play board games. Watch TV. Sleep. Just stay inside if at all possible. College campuses are often filled with trees that could come down with no notice. If trees are falling down or the winds start really picking up. Get into the hallway and away from windows.

Chill You’ve got at least 2 days off from college. Likely, nothing like this has happened in years at your college. Take advantage of it. Have a dance party in your lounge. Go mattress surfing. Relax and take advantage of all this free time.
